Deer Crossing
at the bottom of the hill, remnants of mist and shadows
give false security for their crossing
as the morning cars have no reluctance
to travel this back road at high speed.
tawny shadows, single file
stepping gingerly on the pavement,
heads turning in tandem at the approaching sound.
then, leaping triumphantly into the brush
at the far side, a safe haven
where they fade into themselves
like smoke.
at the bottom of the hill, remnants of mist and shadows
give false security for their crossing
as the morning cars have no reluctance
to travel this back road at high speed.
tawny shadows, single file
stepping gingerly on the pavement,
heads turning in tandem at the approaching sound.

where they fade into themselves
like smoke.
