A Feathered Separatist
Early morning and early evening
I drive past the swans,
their pond broad and clear
sparkling in sunlight,
yet
a solitary swan rejects the comfort
wandering outside the enclosure
swimming in the drainage ditch
waddling in the freshly plowed adjacent field
hobnobbing with Canada Geese
a swan of a different feather.
